We are here Battersea Arts Centre has built a reputation for inovative theatre and related activities in what used to be Battersea Town Hall on Lavender Hill. Most of the area is covered by the London Borough of Wandsworth. Much the East and South of Clapham Common is covered by the London Borough of Lambeth with its Town Hall in Brixton. The Battersea/Clapham junction area must boast London's most busy and varied range of restaurants outside Soho! Everybody with a new 'concept' in eating tries it out in SW11 first - so you can enjoy tomorrow's trends today. It also has many established restaurants for those looking for fine and or economical food. Listings can be found here: On the Thames is the famous Battersea Power Station featured in the Pink Floyd album and caused the launch of BBC2 TV to be postponed after a failure put much London in the dark back in 1964. This was followed by failure of developers to bring new life to the building when power generation was phased out. Clapham Common is a grand centre of the area. Fine large residences run along the north side with superb views across the common to the south. Betwen these and Lavender Hill is a tight network of smaller Victorian houses. These make fine family homes. Further to the north between Lavender Hill and Battersea Park Road are earler, mostly smaller, victorian houses with some local authority development. Some larger buildings, such as retired schools, are now being redeveloped as interesting loft conversions enabling people to have a prestige apartment with very convenient access to the West End. Then at the river's edge are a range of large new developments with amazing views of the river and of Chelsea & Fulham on the other side. The Arding & Hobbs department store dominates the SW11 shopping scene (part of the Allders group). It stands at the head of a busy High Street (with only buses and cyclists to avoid) with shops of every other description - and some with a reputation and customer across much of London. Other centre's include Clapham Town which has a Sainsbury's hypermarket and one of the best motorcycle shops in London. Lavender Hill is a long road with many shops spread along its legth. Wherever you are you will not be far from the nearest shop. Rail Home to the busiest railway junction in the world (Clapham Junction) gives Battersea access within 5 minutes to London Vauxhall, Victoria & Waterloo termini. There is also the railway running through West London (Olympia) giving access to trains running through West, North & East London. Almost every destination to the South and South West of London is served by fast electric train - from Brighton to Bournemouth. Tube The Northern line runs to the East of the area coming up from Balham to Clapham South, Clapham Common and Clapham North. Thos intersects with the Victoria line at Stockwell for access to the West End, has two branches that go through the central london and the City besides linking at london Bridge with the new Jubilee extension which makes Canary Wharf and the rest of the Docklands developments fast and easy to get too. Buses Wonderful if you use 'em - a pain if you are in a car - the area is very well served by buses runing in all directions - serving central London, nearby suburbs or linking to the tubes and trains. Roads The roads are very congested but most of the area is covered by Resident's Parking restrictions - so for a fee you should be able to park very near your home. The South Circular road bisects the area and crosses south of Clapham Common. Once you have got through Wandsworth this links to the fast dual carriageway A3 giving access to Surrey and the M25 ring motorway for other major roads and airports. Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce |
